Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are they like to live with.
A: Although having individual levels, most are a high to very high energy dog. Lively and intelligent with lots of stamina, and having a very strong scenting ability, they can go all day . This energy must be channelled into constructive activities or it may be used for destructive or unwanted behaviours instead. They require calm benevolent leadership with a structured routine having clear rules and boundaries.
With adequate physical and mental exercise they become the perfect companion for either the sporty outdoors person, or, the couch potato, as they are just as happy curled up next to you in front of the TV.

Born to Run
Q: What about temperment.
A: Good breeders should give you the opportunity to see at least one, (preferably both), parent of a litter, giving you an initial guide. However breeding is only half the equation, good socialization and upbringing of a puppy by breeder and new owner plays a huge part in the dogs final temperment.
With this in mind the Welsh can become a friendly, social, happy go lucky dog that is a joy to have in any situation.

Q: How much maintenance is required on the Welshie.
A: Regular grooming is a must for any dog, more so with the Welsh.
Start them while young with daily brushing, checking eyes, ears, between toes and their nails to get them accustomed to being handled.
Because of the dirt shedding ability of the coat , bathing is only occasionally needed .
Regular trimming of the Feet, Hocks, Ears , Tail, Neck and Breast is also required to keep them looking at their best .
Your breeder can give you more detailed information on grooming requirements

Q. Why are Welsh Springer Spaniels' tails docked?
A. Origionally the tails were docked to prevent damage or injury to the tail. Because the Welsh Springer is used to flush game it is required to push through heavy foliage and undergrowth where its heavily feathered tail could become entangled. Tail Docking is now banned in Australia.
